An $80+ million competition to advance single-administration vaccine platforms for pandemic influenza A(H5N1)
The Single Shield Prize is now open. The $80+ million competition seeks innovations that could advance single-administration vaccines for pandemic influenza A(H5N1). Eligible innovators are invited to submit concept papers by January 15, 2027.
Pandemic influenza A(H5N1) remains a serious public health threat. Currently-approved A(H5N1) vaccines — and many other vaccines for viral diseases — require two or more doses, making it harder to slow disease spread during an outbreak.
The competition specifically focuses on innovations for recombinant hemagglutinin (rHA) protein or inactivated virus vaccines, including but not limited to novel vaccine formulations, antigen presentation, controlled release technologies, and vaccine delivery methods. By building on established influenza vaccine platforms, the competition targets innovations grounded in proven approaches.
Across three stages, the prize will award more than $80 million to teams with promising technologies from concept through preparation for human clinical trials.
An opportunity to collaborate and connect
The prize welcomes eligible vaccine developers and researchers, biotech companies, and other innovators developing technologies for single-administration A(H5N1) vaccines.
Entrants are encouraged to collaborate throughout the competition. Entrants can connect with potential partners across development, manufacturing, and commercialization through curated networking events, including at a Proposers’ Day and select industry conferences. Select teams may also be invited to present their work to industry leaders and potential investors during Demo Day events.
How the Concept Stage works
The Single Shield Prize begins with the Concept Stage. To submit, entrants must first complete a Declaration of Intent (DOI) with basic team information and a brief description of their proposed vaccine candidate. DOIs will be reviewed on a rolling basis until January 5, 2027.
Eligible teams whose projects align with the competition scope will then be invited to submit a concept paper by January 15, 2027. Up to eight Concept Stage winners will each receive a $4 million award in mid-2027.
Later prize stages will support continued development through nonclinical testing, safety studies, and preparation for human clinical trials.
